    Gabe

Gabe brings the principles of truth and authenticity in documentary journalism to the college admissions process, helping students produce captivating videos that bring their passions to life. Drawing on his extensive experience in the industry, he guides students through every stage of the process while providing ongoing encouragement and technical support. He believes that anyone with a curious eye, a steady hand, and a plan can make a great video. Gabe is committed to making the process fun, transforming beginners into budding filmmakers ready to express themselves in an increasingly important medium.

For over 25 years, he has taught teens, interns, apprentices, and professional journalists to produce video and appear on camera. Gabe spent a decade at The New York Times, where he launched the paper's first two weekly video series and was part of a small team that won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism. He then spent six years at The Wall Street Journal with the Page One and Investigative Teams. Gabe served as producer, writer, and reporter on a WSJ/Frontline PBS project about the Indian Health Service which prompted federal investigations, was nominated for an Emmy, and won the Nieman Foundation’s 2020 Worth Bingham Prize. Currently, he is completing a documentary on a Sophocles tragedy that opened at Swarthmore College during the height of the pandemic, and he serves as a mentor with Hudsy’s Apprentice Program in Kingston, NY.

Born in the Bay Area, Gabe grew up in Beijing, Vienna, Taipei, Toronto, Washington D.C. and London. He earned a B.A. in anthropology from Haverford College, is a licensed paramedic, a former improviser and fruit harvester, and a dad to five kids, two dogs, two parakeets, and 23 fish.
